Maintaining Upholstery with Dogs in the Home

It's no surprise that dogs and upholstery don't always go together well. However, there are some things you can do to maintain your upholstery with a fur baby in the home:

1. Vacuum your upholstery regularly (at least once a week) to remove pet hair and dirt. Pet hair contains oil that actually ATTRACTS soil so this is very important.

2. Rotate the cushions occasionally, particularly in places that are favored by your pet, to promote even wear.

3. Reduce the amount of dirt and other unwanted particles tracked into your home and onto your upholstery by wiping your pet's paws when entering the home.

4. Cover with a sheet or blanket, as these can be washed frequently. You may also consider purchasing a slip cover for more protection.

5. Clean regularly. Professional cleanings can help to keep your upholstery looking good. It's important to schedule these on a regular basis as the passing of time can turn spots into permanent stains.

Moving Out? Info You'll Want to Know When Calling to Book

Moving out? If you live in a home with carpeting, you'll likely need to schedule a professional cleaning per the terms of your lease agreement. Here are some pieces of information that you'll want to have in mind when you call to schedule a cleaning appointment:

1. The address of the home

2. The areas of the home to be cleaned (e.g. living room, bedroom, stairs, etc.) and the square footage of these areas (not necessary but helpful to receive the most accurate estimate)

3. Any special cleaning concerns you have (e.g. pet stains, red stains, heavy soiling, etc.)

4. Whether there is parking available directly outside the home

5. Date(s)/time(s) that would work for the cleaning appointment. You'll want to schedule your carpet cleaning after you are totally moved out of the home and the home has been cleaned. It's important to make sure that the utilities will still be on at the time of the cleaning (water & electricity).

If you're ready to schedule your move out carpet cleaning, let us know.

Spill Coffee On Your Carpet?

If you spill coffee on your carpet, whether or not the spot can be removed is affected by the caffeine content of the coffee bean (whether it's decaf or regular). Why does that matter? Regular coffee contains natural dyes, "tannins," whereas decaf coffee is most often made from beans that contain artificial coloring (as the process of removing the caffeine can remove the color of the beans along with it). This artificial coloring is much more difficult to remove than the naturally occurring tannins found in regular coffee.

If what you've spilled is regular coffee, you may be feeling pretty relieved at the moment. However, it's important to note that some organic coffees contain artificial coloring as well and whether or not cream and sugar are in the spilled coffee can also affect the removal of the spot.

With all spills, you'll want to avoid panicking and using over the counter spotters that can turn the spot into a permanent stain. If your carpet is affected by coffee (decaf or regular), let us know. We can help!

Does Fabric Protection Actually Make A Difference?

The short answer is yes, it does. There are many advantages to having fabric protection applied to your carpet:

1. It creates a barrier that repels liquid, making it much easier to clean up spots and spills before they become permanent stains.

2. It reduces the amount of wear that occurs in high traffic areas. It can't reverse what damage has already occurred but since it repels dirt and dust, it can lessen the damage these particles can cause.

3 It makes vacuuming more effective so you will be better able to maintain your carpet between cleanings.

4. It saves you money. Not only will the carpet look better for a longer period of time, it can actually extend the life of your carpet.

If you're interested in having fabric protection applied at the time of your next cleaning appointment, let us know. Our technicians are happy to answer any questions you may have and advise you whether this service is something that will benefit you given the age and condition of your carpet.

Carpet Cleaning Tip: Try Using Water First

If something spills on your carpet it can be easy to panic and grab the most concentrated spotter but that’s not always the best move. It’s important to first remove as much of the spill as possible by placing a clean, dry, white cloth over the spill to absorb the moisture. Repeat until the cloth is no longer soaking up moisture. At that point using a clean, damp, white towel, blot the spot until the spill is gone, changing cloths as necessary. If the spot/spill is still visible, you’ll want to move on to plan B, whether that’s using the spotter we provided when we cleaned your carpet, utilizing another cleaning solution like a mix of white vinegar and water, or calling out a professional (the best option will depend on what spilled and your carpet fiber). If you spilled something on your carpet and could use some help, let us know. That’s what we’re here for!

Carpet Care Tips: Keep Carpet Looking Its Best With a Kitty In The Home

  1. Provide your kitty with plenty of things to do and stuff to scratch, such as cardboard, wood, or rope.

  2. Make scratching posts more appealing to your cat by spraying them with a bit of catnip (you'll want to do this outdoors or over hard surface to avoid getting the catnip on the carpet).

  3. Cover any carpeted areas that have been scratched by your cat with flat, heavy objects (ceramic tiles or rubber mats work well) for a few weeks with the hope that breaking the habit of tearing up a particular area will make your pet "forget" about it.

  4. Lightly spray your cat's favorite area to scratch with a spray bottle of water mixed with a few drops of citrus oil. Cats hate the smell of citrus so this could be a good deterrent.

  5. Block access to rooms that you think your kitty cat may cause problems in, especially when you're gone. Just be sure to give your cat plenty of things to do while you're away to keep him/her out of trouble.

A Surprising Reason to Have Carpet Cleaned

Experts recommend a deep cleaning every 6 months in homes with young children but not because kids tend to track more into dirt into the home. It’s actually for safety reasons backed up by the American Lung Association. Carpets trap bacteria, mold spores, dust, and other unwanted particles that pose more of a risk to children because of the amount of time they tend to spend on the floor playing. Having your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis is a key way to maintain a safe play space for your loved ones.
